The Shanghai University of Engineering Science (SUES) is a higher education institution that offers engineering, economics, management, art, design, and other disciplines.
SUES was one of the first pilot universities under the Outstanding Engineer Education and Training Program of the Ministry of Education and the pioneer of Emerging Engineering Education and High-level Application-oriented Universities in Shanghai. It was established in 1985.
SUES has three campuses in Songjiang, Changning, and Hongkou districts in Shanghai, covering a total of nearly 98.4 hectares.
The university boasts schools and colleges such as the School of Mechanical and Automotive Engineering, School of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, and College of International Education. It has also been designated a National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, National Virtual Simulation Experimental Teaching Center, and National University Science Park.
It currently offers 13 master's degree programs for first-level disciplines, eight professional master's degree programs, and 64 undergraduate programs. Its automotive engineering program and railway traffic signal and control program have obtained German ASIIN accreditation, and its traffic management and aircraft manufacturing engineering programs have been accredited by the United States’ AABI.
SUES is focused on advancing the reform of education and teaching and fostering talent development. The university adheres to the tenet of serving socioeconomic development and modern industrial development needs. Through the Industry-University-Research strategic alliance, SUES focuses on education, cultivation, innovation, and joint employment collaborations to train engineers and engineering service talent.
The university is currently home to nearly 24,000 full-time students, including about 4,400 postgraduate students. It has a significant competitive advantage in employment and are generally highly sought after by employers. The employment rate of its students was 96.44 percent in 2022.
Innovation is at the heart of SUES. The university's engineering, materials science and chemistry disciplines are among the top 1 percent of ESI in the world. SUES operates 21 provincial-level scientific research platforms, such as the Collaborative Innovation Center, R&D Public Service Platform, and Engineering Technology Research Center.
Since 2016, SUES has been the lead organization for 194 National Natural Science Fund projects and 52 National Social Science Foundation projects. It also has more than 3,500 patents.
SUES has a heavy focus on developing high-quality and high-level talent. It has nearly 2,000 faculty and staff, including more than 1,550 full-time teachers, among whom over 60 percent hold doctoral degrees. It currently has 25 national-level talents of all kinds, including four academicians from the Chinese Academy of Engineering and nine experts who receive special government allowances from the State Council.
With a focus on providing globalized education, SUES offers international educational resources to improve its internal development and student training. It currently has cooperative relations with more than 110 universities or institutions in more than 20 countries and regions.
SUES currently manages a Sino-foreign cooperative organization called the International Institute of Creative Design. The institute offers Sino-Korean, Sino-French, and Sino-Swiss cooperative education programs and provides more than 110 overseas study and exchange programs that involve training for doctors, master's and undergraduate degrees, mutual recognition of credits, graduation design, overseas internships, online courses, and international industry-university collaboration.
SUES is also a supporter of the Belt and Road Initiative. In this vein, it carries out educational cooperation and exchange with universities involved in the initiative and receives international students from more than 70 countries and regions every year.
