A group of Japanese university students recently experienced the vibrant culture and cutting-edge technology of Shanghai, deepening their connection with the city.

On Sept 3, the students visited the Shanghai Yue Opera House, Baidu Apollo Autonomous Driving Center, and Meituan, immersing themselves in traditional arts while also learning about modern technological advancements.

At the Shanghai Yue Opera House, students like Rina Maejima from Chuo University experienced the intricate art of Yue Opera makeup, transforming her appearance with vibrant colors and elegant lines. The students also enjoyed a captivating performance of classic Yue Opera scenes, with many eagerly mimicking the traditional hand gestures taught by the actors.

"I have always been fascinated by traditional Chinese opera. Last year, I even took some courses on it and learned a great deal," Maejima shared. "In the future, I hope to explore other genres, such as Peking Opera."

The students were also amazed by the autonomous driving advancements at Baidu Apollo. Marika Sejou from Chuo University expressed her surprise at hearing that autonomous taxis are already in use in China.

The highlight for many was experiencing Meituan's drone delivery service. Koharu Hayakawa, another student, ordered bubble tea via drone at Huangxing Park, marveling at the swift and efficient delivery. The students were also impressed by the lightweight construction of the Meituan drones, which weigh only 7 kilograms.
