Last week, New York University Shanghai (NYU Shanghai) welcomed its largest freshman class ever, consisting of 520 new students, who participated in a vibrant week-long orientation program.
A team of 37 student orientation ambassadors (OAs) guided the newcomers through various activities to help them adapt to university life. Dana Zinchenko, a third-year student from Russia, expressed her desire to help new students integrate quickly and feel a sense of belonging.
The orientation week kicked off with an opening ceremony featuring song and dance performances by the OAs, while NYU Shanghai Chancellor Tong Shijun, Vice Chancellor Jeffrey Lehman, and Provost Joanna Waley-Cohen delivered welcoming speeches. After the ceremony, students explored campus facilities, including the sports center, dining halls, and library.
David Pe, assistant vice chancellor for student affairs, emphasized the importance of creating a warm and welcoming environment for the new students.
Throughout the week, activities included academic workshops, team-building games, and cultural integration exercises. Freshman Ren Aining expressed appreciation for the support from her international roommate in overcoming language barriers, providing a great example of the benefits of cultural exchange.
A City Walk introduced students to Shanghai's iconic landmarks, fostering a deeper connection with the city. Lu Xiaoyuan, director of the Center for New Student Programs, encouraged students to explore Shanghai and build friendships through shared experiences.
