Intl students explore Shanghai's historical legacy on North Shaanxi Road
Chinese and international students from Shanghai University embarked on a journey on July 17 to explore the historical and cultural significance of North Shaanxi Road in Jing'an district, Shanghai.
The trip, led by "Readable Architecture" ambassador Wu Fei, highlighted the importance of balancing historical preservation with urban development.
Wu provided an overview of the area's evolution from farmland to an iconic road, emphasizing its significance in Shanghai's modern history. Iconic buildings like the Mahler Villa, Rong Zongjing's Former Residence, and the Song Family Mansion were highlighted as cultural symbols carrying poignant stories.
The students also visited the former site of Shanghai University's Ximo Road campus, founded in 1922 and known for its revolutionary spirit. It serves as a center for disseminating Marxism-Leninism.
The students appreciated the blend of historical preservation and modern vitality and reflected on China's unique approach to urban development.
"Short but rich in history, North Shaanxi Road's architecture made me feel like I had traveled back in time. The local cuisine was also memorable," said Ploypailin Kinra from Thailand.
"The visit deepened my understanding of the importance of preserving historical and cultural heritage, respecting the past, and leaving a legacy for the future," said Gan Xu Hao from Malaysia.
