Founded in 1951, the university has grown into one of China’s most prestigious universities, with a range of disciplines covering education, the social sciences, the humanities, natural sciences, technology, and administration.

It has two campuses respectively in the Minhang and Putuo districts, and enjoys the nickname "Garden University" for their beautiful scenery. 

The school offers 76 undergraduate programs, 190 master’s programs, 130 doctoral programs, and 18 post-doc programs. It also has seven research institutes and is involved in publishing more than 20 academic journals and periodicals. Its library holds more than 4.25 million volumes.

The school has 4,000 faculty members, with 13 members of China’s Academy of Sciences and Academy of Engineering. It enrolls more than 27,000 students, around 5,000 of them international students. 

International Students Office oversees international student affairs. There are 10 clubs under the direct leadership of ISU, short for International Students’ Union, such as dance, juijitsu, basketball, football and film clubs.
