Founded in Shanghai in 1896, Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) is one of the world's most famous institutions of higher learning with among the longest histories.

It is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education and was jointly built with Shanghai Municipality.

After more than 120 years of unremitting efforts, SJTU has become a domestic first-class and internationally renowned university and has further defined its vision of becoming "comprehensive, innovative and international" world-class university.

It made the top 100 in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2023 at the 52nd spot.

The university currently has campuses totaling more than 300 hectares spread over the Shanghai districts of Xuhui, Minhang, Huangpu, Changning, Pudong New Area and Chongming.

SJTU boasts a total of 34 schools and departments, with 17,606 full-time undergraduates, 26,944 full-time graduate students, and 2,096 international students. Its faculty includes 3,700 full-time teachers, 28 members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and 26 members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

As a comprehensive university, SJTU offers 75 undergraduate programs covering nine major disciplines: economics, law, literature, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, management, and arts.
