Sofia Lai Velasquez Shum, from Costa Rica, has always been passionate about learning and exploring. Born in 2003, she arrived in China in 2021 to study at the UM-SJTU Joint Institute at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Now a junior in electronic and computer engineering, Sofia is diligently pursuing her childhood dreams.
Her decision to study in China was influenced by her Chinese heritage. "I have always felt a deep connection with Chinese culture," she explained. Despite initial challenges caused by the language barrier, the Joint Institute's English-taught programs allowed her to thrive academically while improving her Chinese.
Sofia finds joy in her rigorous academic journey, particularly enjoying Professor Liu Yuena's course on electromagnetics. "She made me realize that the true value of learning lies in the process, not just in grades," she reflected.
Balancing her busy schedule, Sofia moves constantly between academic buildings, the library, and the Long Bin Building, a place for exchanging ideas. Evenings often involve dining with friends at the Magnolia Restaurant before heading home. Weekends are for discovering Shanghai's vibrant streets and enjoying its diverse, delicious food. Sofia also travels to other cities like Hangzhou and Suzhou during holidays.
As vice-president of the International Student Association, Sofia helps create a supportive environment for international students, ensuring they feel at home.
After graduating next year, Sofia plans to pursue a master's degree in energy and computing systems. Inspired by the Joint Institute's diverse and international environment, she feels fortunate to be surrounded by passionate individuals who continually inspire her academically and professionally.
