Reflections on my summer school experience in Shanghai
My name is Adnane Kailil from Casablanca, Morocco, and my recent summer school experience in China was an extraordinary journey filled with personal growth, cultural exploration, and unforgettable moments. The program offered a unique blend of activities that not only broadened my understanding of Chinese culture but also left a lasting impact on my perspective of the world.
A particularly special aspect of this trip was reuniting with my two brothers, who both study at Shanghai International Studies University (SISU). Sharing this adventure with them added a unique dimension to the experience. We explored the city together, from its bustling markets to serene parks, creating memories that strengthened our familial bond. Our shared experiences ranged from navigating unfamiliar streets to trying new activities, each moment enriching our relationship and enhancing the enjoyment of the trip. The cultural activities provided by the camp were instrumental in deepening my appreciation for Chinese traditions. We engaged in a variety of experiences, including sightseeing, calligraphy and Taiji lessons etc...
Meeting and forming friendships with people from various countries was one of the most rewarding aspects of the camp. The diverse group of participants added a rich layer to the experience, as we shared our own cultures and learned from one another. These interactions fostered a sense of global community and highlighted the common values that unite us despite our diverse backgrounds. The friendships formed during this trip have been a source of personal growth and have broadened my perspective on the world.
However, the trip was not without its challenges. The weather in China, Shanghai, characterized by intense heat and high humidity, was a significant adjustment. The constant presence of mosquitoes added an extra layer of discomfort, particularly during outdoor activities. While these factors were less than ideal, they were manageable and did not diminish the overall positive experience of the trip. Another challenge I faced was finding food that suited my tastes. Although I was eager to try new dishes, I encountered difficulties in locating options that matched my preferences. The local cuisine, while diverse and flavorful, was occasionally difficult to navigate. This experience highlighted the importance of flexibility and openness when exploring new culinary traditions. Despite these challenges, the summer camp program in China was an unforgettable journey of discovery. The opportunity to reconnect with my brothers, engage in cultural activities, explore historical and contemporary sites, and connect with people from around the world was invaluable. The minor inconveniences, such as the weather and food preferences, were overshadowed by the richness of the overall experience.
This trip has broadened my perspective and deepened my appreciation for cultural diversity. It has reinforced the notion that, despite our differences, there are universal values and shared experiences that connect us all. The lessons learned and the friendships forged during this journey will continue to influence my view of the world and my approach to cultural exchange. This experience has not only enriched my understanding of China but has also contributed to my personal growth and global awareness.
In conclusion, my summer camp experience in China was a profound and transformative journey. The blend of personal connections, cultural immersion, and global friendships has left a lasting impression on me. The challenges encountered were minor compared to the overall richness of the experience. This trip has enhanced my appreciation for diverse cultures and has reinforced the importance of open-mindedness and adaptability in our increasingly interconnected world. I can't wait to make it back to China someday to explore its cultural richness and also to improve my Chinese, so I can communicate with more people and see what this amazing country has to offer!
