2025 Shanghai Summer School in Review
The Shanghai Summer School (3S) program, launched by the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, serves as a key window for international educational cooperation and exchange. It is designed to build bridges between Shanghai and the world—connecting different languages and cultures, and attracting outstanding international students to experience China, learn Chinese, and pursue their studies in Shanghai.
Since its launch in 2008, the 3S program has grown steadily. What began with just 25 students and teachers from Shanghai's sister cities in Japan and South Korea has since expanded significantly in both scope and participation. The program offers a variety of Chinese cultural and language courses, funded by the Shanghai Government Scholarship for Foreign Students, and hosted by Shanghai's universities. Each year, selected international students come to Shanghai for a one-month immersive experience in Chinese language and culture. These programs have been well received by both international participants and host institutions, and the global influence of 3S continues to grow.
The 3S program is a vital initiative in enhancing Shanghai's international presence in education, developing the city's international student sector, and promoting cross-cultural exchange. It not only deepens young people's understanding of the Chinese language and culture, but also sparks their interest in China's history and society. Moreover, it fosters exchange and cooperation among students from different countries, building lasting friendships. The Shanghai Municipal Education Commission is committed to making the 3S program a signature brand of Shanghai's education system and a proud symbol of the city.
