Shanghai University of Political Science and Law (SHUPL) organized a cultural activity for newly enrolled international students, taking them to Shanghai Lyceum Theatre to watch performances featuring Kunqu Opera and Peking Opera. As part of the university’s orientation program, the event helped students explore Shanghai and experience traditional Chinese culture beyond the classroom.

The performances featured classic excerpts from Kunqu Opera and Peking Opera, presenting the refined beauty and dynamic qualities of these two traditional art forms. Through expressive movements—including the flowing gestures of long silk “water sleeves” and martial movements—singing, recitation, elaborate costumes, facial makeup, and engaging stories, the students gained an appreciation of traditional Chinese opera.

For many students, it was their first time watching traditional Chinese opera in a theatre, and they were captivated by the performers’ artistry and the stage presentation.

After the performances, the students reflected on what they had seen. Some said that watching traditional Chinese opera in person offered a different way to learn about Chinese culture beyond the classroom. They also took group photos with the performers.

Since the beginning of the semester, SHUPL has organized a series of cultural programs to help newly enrolled international students adapt to studying and living in Shanghai.

The traditional Chinese opera experience was part of the university’s efforts to incorporate local cultural resources into international student education. By taking learning beyond the classroom and into the city, SHUPL continues to provide international students with opportunities to engage with traditional arts and discover different aspects of Shanghai’s culture.
