Shanghai University's New Year Concert: Where Ancient Chinese Poetry Meets World Music
At the 2026 "Voice of Panchi" New Year Concert held by Shanghai University, the "Wings of Sea" International Student Choir and the "Petrel" Choral Society came together in a unique collaboration. Performing two pieces that transcended cultural and linguistic boundaries, they vividly demonstrated the distinctive charm of Sino-foreign musical fusion.

Ancient Lyrics, New Harmonies, Boundless Resonance
The mixed-voice choral piece "Green Jade Table · Lantern Festival" is based on the timeless poem by Xin Qiji. The work skillfully blends the refined artistic conception of Song Dynasty poetry with the expressive language of modern choral music. Through its intricate, layered vocal arrangements, it vividly paints the shimmering lights and moonlit waters of the Lantern Festival night.
The delicate melodies and poetic imagery enhance each other, allowing traditional literature to shine with new artistic brilliance on the contemporary stage. More importantly, the uniquely Eastern aesthetic of classical Chinese poetry is brought to life through the universal medium of choral singing.
What made this performance especially moving was that this adaptation of a classical Chinese poem was performed in Mandarin by young students from across the globe. For these international students, singing Chinese poetry in a non-native language transformed the written words from static text into something palpable — understood, felt, and shared through genuine sound and emotion. This was far more than a musical performance; it was a heartfelt dialogue transcending language and culture, infusing traditional Chinese culture with fresh vitality in an international campus setting.

Echoes of Warmth, "Stand By Me"
The classic English song "Stand By Me", first released in 1961, conveys the strength of companionship and steadfast support through its gentle yet resolute melody. Its steady rhythm, crystalline harmonies, and heartfelt emotion weave together, expressing a sense of trust and warmth between people—one that transcends time.
As the melody of "Stand By Me" softly rises, it feels like a gentle beam of light traveling through the years, illuminating the softest corners of the heart, stirring empathy and deep emotion.
Two distinct works: one carrying the poetic soul of the East, the other voicing emotions shared by all humanity. On the New Year’s stage, international students from around the world used their voices to build a bridge of cultural exchange, singing of understanding, companionship, and hope.

Mixed Choir — “Stand by Me”
As an international student, I am deeply honored to be part of the "Wings of Sea" International Student Choir at Shanghai University and to have performed on the stage of the "Voice of Panchi" New Year Gala for two consecutive years. While preparing for the 2026 New Year Concert, we meticulously rehearsed the Chinese piece "Green Jade Table: The Lantern Festival." The graceful artistic conception of this Song Dynasty poetry allowed me to truly feel the boundless charm of Chinese culture. As for the English song "Stand By Me," its warm and resonant harmonies made me experience the sincere sense of companionship that transcends language. The days of rigorous practice with our teachers and fellow students were demanding, yet filled with laughter and fulfillment.
Under the spotlight, I was overjoyed to convey New Year’s blessings through song, and I hope this sense of happiness will remain with every member of the audience for a long time to come.

This performance fully embodied the international, inclusive, and persevering spirit of the "Wings of Sea" Choir. Through the Chinese piece "Green Jade Table: The Lantern Festival," we interpreted the profound Eastern lyricism of "searching a thousand times in the crowd." With the timeless English classic "Stand By Me," we joined the audience in revisiting a melody that transcends generations.
Each song presented its own unique style and challenges. Under the guidance of our instructors, my fellow choir members and I worked together to deliver this meaningful performance. As the final New Year's concert of my undergraduate journey, every moment of rehearsal and every note on stage has left a lasting mark on my college years.

Joining the choir became a deeply transformative experience that reignited my passion for music and helped me reconnect with myself. What began as uncertainty gradually turned into confidence, belonging, and emotional openness. Through shared effort, encouragement, and trust, I learned to listen to my own voice and to others, discovering the power of unity and collective expression. The choir became a safe, healing space where fear gave way to joy and vulnerability turned into strength. Performing taught me to let go of perfection and embrace feeling.Over time, I've felt a deep sense of gratitude and fulfillment. To me, it remains a lasting home, one that continues to echo with warmth, meaning, and belonging.

Joining the HEY Choir has been one of the most meaningful experiences in my university life. Being part of this choir gave me the opportunity to grow, to challenge myself, and to share the joy of music with others especially during the New Year Music Concert.I still remember when I first joined the choir I was shy and lacked confidence. Although I loved music and singing, I was afraid of performing on stage. However, through the support and encouragement of the HEY Choir, I gradually became more confident and brave. With every rehearsal and performance, I learned how to express myself without fear and enjoy singing together with the team.
Most importantly, I met many amazing people in the choir. They are not only friends, but also feel like a family to me. I am deeply grateful for this meaningful experience and will always cherish these memories.
