Shanghai University Sino-Foreign Student Psychology Salon #17 | Finding Sparks: A Search for Meaning in Daily Routine

On the afternoon of January 9, 2025, the 17th Sino-Foreign Student Psychology Salon, titled "Finding Meaning in Everyday Life," was warmly held in Classroom D223 at the Baoshan Campus. The event was jointly organized by the Shanghai University Psychological Counseling Center and the College of International Education, and featured Dr. Li Rui, a certified national psychological counselor, as the guest facilitator.
Held just before the final exam week, a period when many students grapple with academic pressure and anxiety, this session aimed to guide participants in mindfully recognizing and reflecting on positive moments in their daily lives through group interaction and sharing. The goal was to help students find inner calm and emotional replenishment amidst their busy study schedules.
Looking Inward, Sharing Forward

The session began with Dr. Li Rui guiding participants through a relaxation exercise. The main lights were then turned off, leaving only a soft night light. In the serene glow, students wrote down keywords representing their current state—"stress," "anticipation," "busyness"—reflecting the common emotions during finals. Subsequently, accompanied by gentle music, each person recorded a recent moment that brought them happiness.
Sharing Moments of Light, Exchanging Warmth
In a supportive setting, students shared their personal "happy moments"—from the joy of planning a trip home, to the relief found in exercise, or the comfort of a friend's support. These simple yet meaningful instances highlighted how often happiness lies in everyday connections, self-care, and personal progress.
Dr. Li emphasized that actively recognizing and reflecting on such positive experiences is a key skill for building inner resilience.

From Noticing to Doing: Bringing Happiness Full Circle
The event transitioned into a commitment phase, where students penned down practical personal pledges—such as "noting a daily joy," "a weekly call home," or "a ten-minute evening walk"—turning reflection into tangible, sustaining habits. Supported by one another, they closed the loop from noticing, to sharing, to doing.
Dr. Li wrapped up by reflecting that significance often resides in life's minor details. Collecting these everyday sparks of light can guide us toward a more resilient and grounded inner life. The salon closed amid a shared sense of warmth and connection.
