Mary, a student from Kazakhstan who is studying dance at Shanghai Normal University, has embraced Chinese culture and found the Spring Festival to be particularly captivating.
"In my hometown, we also have a Spring Festival called Nauryz. On the day of the vernal equinox, we hold activities like horse racing, eagle hunting, and singing to commemorate the beginning of spring," said Mary.
She said that although the festive customs of the two countries differ significantly, these traditional festivals are universally cherished. She recalled past Chinese New Year celebrations, marked by vibrant dragon and lion dances, temple fair visits, and joyous New Year's Eve dinners, that have become cherished memories.
As she approaches graduation and prepares to return home, Mary sought a distinctive way to celebrate this year's Spring Festival. Intrigued by the traditions of "Old Shanghai", she immersed herself in the local customs, including enjoying a bowl of vegetarian noodles after temple blessings and exploring the festive activities around Longhua Temple.
China has always held a special place in Mary's heart. "Since I was a child learning dance, my dance teacher used to show us videos of Chinese classical and ethnic dances. I was attracted by these beautiful dances and I really liked Chinese dance. I especially wanted to come to China to see it in person," Mary reminisced. Therefore, when she learned of the opportunity to study abroad, she chose China without hesitation.
From her childhood fascination with Chinese dance, to her current fluency in the language and deep understanding of the country's culture, Mary has developed a profound connection with China. Her New Year's wish is to finish exploring Shanghai's Xuhui district, where she lives, so that she can fully comprehend its rich history and natural beauty. Mary believes that this would be a perfect close to her enriching experience as an international student.
