Opened in November 2009, Shanghai City Theater is a cultural landmark in the southwest of the city.

The theater serves various genres of arts with complete high-end facilities. Covering a construction area of 7,012 square meters, it can accommodate more than 1,000 people over two stories. The stage is 17.5 meters wide and 20 meters deep, and is equipped with an elevating orchestra pit, Strand lighting consoles, Yamaha sound consoles, programmed stage suspenders, removable acoustic reflecting covers and a set of German-made stage lifting and turning machinery. Two LED character-generators are installed on both sides above the stage. Auxiliary facilities, such as dressing rooms, a costume room, a rehearsal room, a chorus hall and a VIP lounge, provide excellent conditions for troupes during their preparations.

Shanghai City Theater is devoted to presenting excellent stage arts from home and abroad to advance cultural exchanges, including the Broadway musical Fame, the Western classical ballet Giselle, a concert by the Haydn Philharmonic Orchestra of Austria and Hungary, the well-known Chinese original dance operas Thousand-Hand Bodhisattva and The Banquet, and martial arts drama Soul of Shaolin, among many others shows.
